Why You Need Tabular Reporting in Qlik Cloud

Tabular reporting is essential for businesses that need structured, formatted reports extracted from Qlik Sense applications. Unlike dashboards and visual analytics, tabular reports provide precise, row-based outputs that are ideal for:

  • Operational reporting – Generating detailed reports for finance, sales, and compliance teams.

  • Regulatory and audit purposes – Ensuring accurate, repeatable reporting for governance.

  • Distribution-ready reports – Providing stakeholders with Excel or PDF reports that summarize key metrics and trends.

With Qlik Cloud’s in-app reporting, businesses can streamline and automate the creation of these reports, ensuring timely delivery and accuracy without manual data extraction.

I also received feedback from Martin last week that Subscriptions do not include the entire visualisation or table if it includes scrollbars. That is totally correct, and a limitation of Subscriptions!

That’s why you need Tabular Reporting as the next option!

Who Should Use It?

Tabular reporting is valuable for:

  • Finance & Accounting Teams – Generating structured financial statements.

  • Operations & Logistics – Producing daily, weekly, or monthly operational reports.

  • Sales & Marketing – Tracking KPIs and sales performance across different regions.

  • IT & Data Analysts – Automating reporting workflows, reducing ad-hoc data requests.

For any organization that relies on regularly formatted reports, enabling Tabular Reporting within Qlik Cloud ensures efficiency, scalability, and data accuracy.

Getting Started: Setting Up Tabular Reporting in Qlik Cloud

Before generating reports, administrators must first configure Tabular Reporting in Qlik Cloud. This involves enabling the feature, setting up permissions, and installing the required Qlik Excel add-in.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Enable Tabular Reporting in Qlik Cloud

By default, in-app reporting is available for Qlik Cloud tenants, but it must be turned on in the Qlik Management Console by a tenant administrator.

Steps to enable tabular reporting:

  1. Log into Qlik Cloud Management Console as a tenant administrator.

  2. Navigate to Settings > Sharing and Reports.

  3. Find the In-App Reporting toggle and switch it On (green).

  4. Save the settings and refresh the Qlik Sense Hub.

Once enabled, users with the correct permissions will see the Reporting menu inside Qlik Sense applications.

2. Configure Admin Console Settings

Admins must ensure that the reporting feature is properly configured in the Qlik Cloud Management Console.

Key settings include:

  • SMTP Email Server – Required for distributing reports via email. Navigate to Settings > Notifications/SMTP to configure this.

  • Feature Entitlement Check – Ensure your Qlik Cloud subscription includes the Qlik Reporting Service (available in Standard/Premium tiers).

  • Access Controls – Assign appropriate roles and permissions to users who will create and manage reports.

3. Assigning the Right Permissions

Access to tabular reporting depends on user roles and space permissions.

  • Tenant Admins: Enable/disable tabular reporting and manage OAuth settings.

  • Space Permissions:

    • Shared Space: Users need at least Can Edit rights.

    • Managed Space: Users need Can Operate or Can Manage permissions.

    • Personal Space: Users must have the Private Analytics Content Creator role.

  • App-Level Permissions: Users must have access to the app’s data and objects to use them in reports.

Without the correct permissions, users will not see the Reporting section in Qlik apps.

4. Install the Qlik Excel Add-in for Tabular Reporting

A key component of tabular reporting is the Qlik add-in for Microsoft Excel, which allows users to design report templates. This add-in must be installed manually.

How to Install the Qlik Excel Add-in

Step 1: Create an OAuth Client for Excel Add-in

  1. In Qlik Cloud Management Console, go to OAuth Clients.

  2. Click Create New and select Single-Page App.

  3. Set the Redirect URL: https://<your-tenant>.qlikcloud.com/office-add-ins/oAuthLoginSuccess.html.

  4. Save and copy the Client ID.

Step 2: Generate the Excel Add-in Manifest

  1. Go to Settings > Sharing and Reports > Excel Add-in.

  2. Select the OAuth client created in Step 1.

  3. Click Copy Manifest URL or Download Manifest File.

Step 3: Deploy the Excel Add-in

There are two ways to install the add-in:

  • Central Deployment (Recommended):

    • Microsoft 365 Admins can deploy the add-in across users via Admin Center > Office Add-ins.

    • Use the manifest URL to install the add-in organization-wide.

  • Manual Installation (Sideloading):

    • Open Excel, go to Insert > Get Add-ins > Upload Add-in.

    • Upload the downloaded manifest XML file.

    • The Qlik add-in icon should now appear in the Excel Ribbon.

5. Connecting Excel to Your Qlik Tenant

Once installed, the Excel add-in must be connected to your Qlik Cloud tenant.

How to Connect Excel to Qlik Cloud

  1. Open Excel and click the Qlik Add-in from the ribbon.

  2. Click Connect to Qlik Cloud.

  3. Log in using your Qlik Cloud credentials.

  4. Select the Qlik Sense App you want to use for reporting.

  5. Click Save to complete the setup.

Once connected, users can start designing report templates using data from their Qlik apps.

Next Steps: Creating a Tabular Report

At this point, Tabular Reporting is fully enabled, and users can begin designing report templates in Excel.

In the next edition of The Data Mix, we’ll cover how to create tabular reports step by step, including:

✅ Designing report templates with the Qlik Excel Add-in
✅ Creating scheduled and on-demand report tasks in Qlik Cloud
✅ Distributing reports via email and shared storage
