šŸ” Deep Dive: How to Get the Most from Insight Advisor in Qlik Sense

Insight Advisor is one of Qlik’s most powerful - and most misunderstood - features.

It promises AI-powered analytics, natural language search, and auto-generated insights. But many users never scratch the surface.

In this edition, we’re unpacking how to unlock Insight Advisor’s full potential. Whether you're a business user, data lead, or Qlik developer, this guide shows you how to:

  • Ask smarter questions

  • Configure Business Logic

  • Use it in Microsoft Teams

  • Compare SaaS vs Enterprise setup

Let’s dive in.

What Is Insight Advisor?

Insight Advisor is Qlik’s built-in AI assistant. It allows you to:

  • Ask natural-language questions like "Sales by region last year"

  • Get auto-generated charts, KPIs, and narrative insights

  • Use conversational chat to refine analysis

  • Explore trends, drivers, and comparisons in plain English

There are two ways to use it: Search and Chat.

Two Ways to Use It

Insight Advisor Search
Use this inside any Qlik app. Ideal for quick exploration using measures and dimensions.

Examples:
"Profit by product line"
"Compare sales and cost by region"

Insight Advisor Chat
Found in the Qlik Cloud or Enterprise Hub. Lets you ask questions across apps with a conversation-like flow.

Example:
"Top 10 customers this year" → "Now show Europe" → "Split by product"

Using Insight Advisor in Microsoft Teams

For Qlik Cloud users, Insight Advisor can be embedded directly into Microsoft Teams.

Setup (for Admins):

  1. Go to Qlik Cloud Hub > Admin > Settings > Integration

  2. Authorize the Microsoft Teams connection

  3. Deploy the Qlik for Teams app

  4. Add the app to a Teams channel or DM

  5. Ask questions like:
"Top 5 products by margin in Q1"

What Users Can Do:

  • Ask questions directly in Teams

  • Receive charts and summaries

  • Click to open in Qlik Cloud for deeper analysis

Asking Better Questions

The quality of your Insight Advisor answers depends on the question structure.

What Works Well:

  • "What is total revenue for 2024?"

  • "Top 5 customers by margin in Europe"

  • "Compare sales and cost by category"

  • "Show delivery delays trend by product"

What to Avoid:

  • "Revenue?" (Too vague)

  • "Sales cost category" (Too ambiguous)

Use clear measures, dimensions, and filters for best results.

Setting It Up

Qlik Cloud (SaaS):

  • Toggle on Insight Advisor Chat per app

  • Manage permissions via Spaces

  • Built-in and always up to date

Qlik Enterprise (Windows):

  • Ensure your license includes IA Chat

  • Set up a QMC rule for IAChat_*

  • Enable the feature in each app

  • Use Section Access and master items to manage visibility

Improving Accuracy with Business Logic

Business Logic tells Insight Advisor how your data should behave.

What You Can Define:

  • Field groups (e.g. CustomerID and CustomerName)

  • Hierarchies (e.g. Year > Quarter > Month)

  • Packages (to separate unrelated fields)

  • Behaviors (prefer, deny, or require certain combinations)

  • Calendar periods (e.g. YTD, Rolling 12 Months)

  • Vocabulary (map synonyms like "clients" to CustomerName)

How to Configure Business Logic

  1. Open your app and click "Business Logic"

  2. Enable the logical model

  3. Define field groups and set primary fields

  4. Add behaviors (e.g. prefer Sales by Product)

  5. Create dynamic calendar periods (e.g. YTD = Date <= Today())

  6. Map synonyms using master item tags like alt:revenue

šŸ’”Optimization Tips

  • Keep app field counts lean (under 500 fields)

  • Use master items consistently

  • Hide technical fields using visibility settings

  • Add clear synonyms for common terms

  • Check usage logs for failed queries and gaps

  • Apply default time filters to avoid confusion

Real-World Scenarios

Sales Manager:
"Top customers this quarter" → Bar chart

Marketing Lead:
"Campaign ROI by channel" → Pie chart with narrative

Finance Director:
"Compare OPEX Q2 vs Q1" → Comparison chart

Ops Lead:
"Delivery delays in last 6 months" → Trend line with spikes flagged

HR Analyst:
"Gender diversity by department" → Treemap or bar chart
